Parapsychology takes a scientific approach to studying paranormal phenomena. Paranormal experiences are defined as an experience which seems to defy known scientific laws. However this field has uncovered as many questions as answers and still yet there is much to be understood about what is parapsychology.  

The field has been part of a vast initiative to explain paranormal experience using a scientific model. There are many experiences that are associated with parapsychology including, telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, precognition, near death experience, out of body experience, reincarnation, place memory and PSI.

PSI is a neutral term for parapsychological phenomena and is synonymous with psychical. Telepathy on the other hand is used to describe a specific type of psychic ability. Telepathy encompasses the ability to conduct direct mind-to-mind communication. Precognition is similar to premonition, in which a person is able to obtain information about future events without the input of normal sensory gained information. Many people report dreams that appear to be precognitive.

Clairvoyance is sometimes called remote viewing. It includes being able to gather information about events at remote locations, beyond the reach of the normal senses.

The common expression ESO stands for Extra-sensory perception and is a general term for being able to point out events beyond the reach of the normal senses. This term is often used as an umbrella that encompasses telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition.

Psychokinesis, also called PK is actually a direct mental interaction with physical objects, animate or inanimate. And Bio-PK, which is related, is the direct mental interactions with living systems.

Parapsychologist also study experiences. People, who do not claim to have psychic abilities, often have psychic experiences. A Near Death Experience, NDE, is defined as an experience reported by those who were revived from nearly dying. Often refers to a core experience that includes feelings of peace, Out-of-Body-Experience, OBE, seeing lights and other phenomena. The OBE is the feeling of being separated from the body Many people who have OBE also report having a visual perceptions as though from above the body.

Other ideas associated with parapsychology include reincarnation. Although this is not specifically a psychic experience or ability if reincarnation could be proven so could the idea that the mind is somehow separated from the body. Reincarnation is essentially the belief that we live successive lives, with primarily evidence coming from the apparent recollections of previous lives by very small children.

All of these experiences are part of the study of ESP, mind and matter association and experience which suggest that the mind operates separately from the body. This ideal has its roots in spiritualism the precursor of parapsychology. And spirituality is still very much a part of parapsychology. Scientifically speaking paranormal experience would prove that current professionals know very little about the mind and its impact on the material world. Further if it can be proved that the spirit or intellect of a being goes on after the body ceases to exist then the current philosophies of almost everything know to man would no longer be valid. Religious experiences could be explained and the mainstream thought consciousness would be altered forever.
