Merriam Webster Dictionary defines consciousness as “the quality or state of being aware especially of something within oneself.” Yet scholars and scientist across the globe have a hard time defining this state of being in such a simple format.
Some assert that the term consciousness refers to the many thoughts, perceptions, emotions, moods and awareness of the self. Yet the Stafford Encyclopedia of Philosophy states that the word “conscious” and “consciousness” are both umbrella terms used to describe a variety of mental phenomena.
“Both are used with a diversity of meanings,” the encyclopedia asserts. “And to particular mental states and processes — state consciousness.”
The vast array of information associated with “conscious” poses a complex problem distinguishing what it is and how it is important. In the past the idea of consciousness was too abstract for scientists and was considered a philosophical or psychological issue. But today consciousness is a scientific quest.
Religions across the globe have considered consciousness to be the vortex in which our soul originates. But the current trend asserts that the personality, identity and individuality, which was formarly associated with the soul, is actually a function of the brain. This new knowledge makes the issue even more complex. The argument mystic make asserts that the soul survives physical death. However, if these are simply elements of chemical and nurological reactions within the brain they would cease to exist after death.
Unfortunatly this new concept of consciousness negates the traditions of practically every traditional culture on the planet. Within every religion and spiritual quest there is a desire to seek within for the answers of life. This is also what elevates us from animals.
Despite the difference in study of what consciousness is one element which holds true each idividual basis their reality upon their consciousness. No matter which way you address this issue it seems to be a fact that there are at least three levels of consciousness and it is the combination of them that make up reality for each of us.
The first level consciousness seems to be the conscious level which is the master of the physical world. It is this version of the “self” that navigates through the material realm. This is the master of the body as well. It is the consious that makes decisions, which may be influenced by other levels of conciousness, as well as focuses the minds attention.
The conscious partially shares control of the body with the sub-concious, the next level of consciousness. The encompasses the mechanics of the body. This is the programmed machine which keeps the body going. This is also where memories and emotions are stored and latter retrieved as a part of the sub-conscious attempts to influence the conscious.
Next there is the super-conscious which transmits information through the sub-conscious. This realm is the spiritual side of each of us. It is not concerned with the physical life at all. This is were the sub-conscious gets many of the memories which will influence the descions of the conscious.
How these levels of consciousness are built and what becomes of them in the afterlife are questions still in progress.
